28 steps to a better life

Hi there everyone,

As you may or may not know the magic number for my weight loss programme is 28, as it takes about this number of times of doing something new for it to become a habit.

I have put together 28 steps to a better and happier life. Have a look through and see what you think;

1. Take a 10-30 minute walk every day. And while you walk, smile. It is the ultimate anti-depressant.

2. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day.

3. Live with the 3 E's -- Energy, Enthusiasm, and Empathy.

4. Play more games than you did in 2007.

5. Spend time with people over the age of 70 and under the age of 6.

6. Dream more while you are awake.

7. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured.

8. Drink  plenty of water.

9. Try to make at least three people smile each day.

10. Clear clutter from your house, your car, your desk and let new and flowing energy into your life.

11. Don't waste your precious energy on gossip, OR issues of the past, negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.

12. Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime.

13. Smile and laugh more. It will keep the NEGATIVE BLUES away.

14. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

15. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

16. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

17. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

18. Make peace with your past so it won't spoil the present.

19. Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

20. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.

21. What other people think of you is none of your business.

22. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

23. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.

24. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

25. The best is yet to come.

26. Each night before you go to bed complete the following statements: I am thankful for __________. Today I accomplished _________.

27. Remember that you are too blessed to be stressed.

28. Enjoy the ride. Remember this is not Disney World and you certainly don't want a fast pass. You only have one ride through life so make the most of it and enjoy the ride.

Until next time, take good care,
Pete

The power of suggestion

Hi there,

So lately I've noticed a lot of people who are following the petecohen.tv program are having great success using  Tool 3 - the Relaxation & Transformation MP3...

Here's just a few of their comments:

"I am still finding the MP3 tool is working the best for me"

"The MP3 is great. At the end I feel wonderful"

"The relaxation MP3 helps me keep my stress levels down and increase my belief in my ability to keep losing weight."

But, dieting is hard work?

So how can this Relaxation Track help people lose weight when it seems like a dichotomy; going against everything that people are usually told about losing weight?

Most people associate weight loss with dieting, and dieting with hard work, denial, sweat and sometimes tears. The process of losing weight makes many people tense and anxious as they are so concerned about how much they are eating or whether they have lost enough weight.

It has always been my goal that in helping people to lose weight, I would also teach them to enjoy the process and become more relaxed and calm.

This is especially important because most people overeat when they are tired, bored, lonely, stressed, anxious or sad, along with many other emotions.  Bad eating habits are not often associated with feeling relaxed, calm and peaceful.

The transformation and relaxation tool relaxes the body and calms the mind. The knock-on effect of this is that people become better at managing their emotions and make better choices, automatically choosing foods which are healthier as well as having an increased desire to exercise and be active.

The power of suggestion.

Everyone is open to suggestion and we are more easily influenced that we think. For example if I was to say to you "What do beans mean ?" - do you hear a voice in your head that goes "HEINZ" ?  Or if I was to say to you "Pringles, once you pop" - do you hear a voice in your head that says "You just can't stop"

The power of positive suggestion or, as some people call it, positive affirmation is an essential part of achieving success in many areas of life, whether  that's sport, business or - of course - losing weight and getting fit.

In this tool I take the person, who wants to lose weight, on a guided journey where I make many positive suggestions to them and their ability to break habits and achieve. The result of this is that people start to give themselves more positive reinforcements and feel good about all the changes they are making.

In addition there are many health benefits from using this tool because when people relax their brains works differently and this creates many positive changes in the body, like decreased blood pressure, heart rate, muscular tension and better digestion.

So until next time, take time to chillax, which is my new made up word for relaxing in the modern world ;)

Burning Down The House

You'll never guess what happened to me?  My house burnt down. Ok, well maybe not 'burnt down', but I came back from filming the launch of GMTV's Inch loss island to find the inside of my house had gone up in smoke. It's really made me stand back and think to myself how lucky I am to be alive. If it had started with me in the house then I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be here any more.

Please send donations to... No never mind - I've got insurance!... marvelous stuff this insurance. It's amazing that there was this fire - in my house - and no-one noticed, it went out of it's own accord when it became starved of oxygen.

The fact is, pretty much everything that was in the house can be replaced. It's actually quite humbling to only have the clothes on your back for a little while. It's made me realise just how much stuff I have that I don't actually need. This is the same for many people and their relationship with food as so many of us eat more than we need. Take some time to have a look around your home and see just how much stuff you have that you don't need or use.

See if you can apply this thinking when you eat and try only eating to the point were you've had enough. Don't eat any more than you need - this behaviour ends up with us carrying around more weight than we need!

So, my golf clubs weren't damaged, and now I'm living in a golf club... so every cloud has a silver lining!
Shame about the bloody weather :)

If you deny someone something...

I saw my friend Becky the other day, she lives near me and she's following the programme. So I just wanted to 'big her up' as she's doing so well.

In fact, she's LOVING it.

Her goal is fairly typical, she wants to lose about 4 stone, and she's lost 12 pounds already. She's doing well, I think, because she's not making any ridiculously massive changes, she doing a bit more walking, actually a lot more walking - walking every day - for about 30 mins. And, she's eating slower, drinking water. She's feeling really good about it. This is the first time in her life that's she doing something where she feels thats shes GETTING SOMEWHERE. She's tried to lose weight for years with other weight loss programs and given up over the last few years with too many disappointments.

Now she's telling me that she feels like she's In Control...  she doesn't feel like she's denying herself anything.

It's a funny thing... if you deny someone something then they're going to want to do it! Like if i said to you "Right, no more pencils", you'd probably say 'Oh, alright, fair enough'... Then after a couple of weeks you'd probably start finding them and stashing them... under the desk, y'know, in a drawer... and you'd probably start using pencils again. And I'd ask you - and you'd say 'No no, I'm not...' Then one day I'd find you doing it and you might say 'Oh, umm yes, you found me out, and yes i have been using the pencils...' and i ask why you're doing it and you'd say 'Well, err, because i like it' - It doesn't work does it!

Now I've worked with loads of people over the years - from people who want to lose 30 stone to someone who wants to lose just a stone or two and there are certain patterns in people who are trying to lose weight . A common pattern i see is that people don't like to be told what to do.

They'll start off saying "Tell me what to do, tell me what to do - I want to lose weight..." so you might prescribe them a program: Exercise three times a week, do this, don't do that... and some people will do it - they'll really Go For It... then inevitably, after a while, it's like that voice in the back of your head that's begrudging you starts saying "I don't want to do this, I want to eat that cake..."

Inside most people theres something that really resents being Told What To Do. They like the idea of it - but the reality is - Who likes to be told what to do? As a child you were told 'Tidy your room', 'do your homework' y'know 'Clean your teeth' etc etc. You want to say 'No! I'll do it my way!'  The people that lose weight and keep it off are the ones who's perspective changes - so it's not that they're being Told What To Do - it's that they're seeing things from a different perspective.

I think one of the biggest things i like to share with people is to help them start to see things from a different angle. Like, if you're overweight or you eat too much, or maybe you eat very quickly, these are just habits - things that you're Good At. So if someone's overweight then they're good at being overweight, they weren't born overweight, it's something they've learned, something they can do. The brain is quite primitive, in that, it thinks that you eating for comfort is what you're supposed to do - it doesn't know that you Don't Want To Do It - it just does it. And the only way you can change is by practicing doing something else until that becomes second-nature.

The hardest people I've tried to work with are those that are just not ready for it... I can't make people change, they have to Want To Change. Let's face it - to change your relationship with food and exercise is undoing pretty-much a lifetime of experience. If people have always turned to food and always hated exercise then that's how they describe themselves. If they don't like exercise then when they go and exercise they'll be saying in their heads 'Well, I don't actually like it...' So how are they going to continue to do it? Similarly if you  try to change what you eat, but in your head you still see yourself as a fat person you'll probably lose weight but you won't see yourself as a slim person. What you see is what you get - you get what you focus on. If you're focusing on the fact that you're fat and inactive then even though you might be taking all this action to try and get slim, you probably won't succeed, especially not in the long run.

Well, I'm off to enjoy some sunshine, Take good care,
Pete :)
