Jon from Albania's Gravatar I am a vegetarian and wondered what the alternatives are to lard and fish oils for high quality Omega 3 andother short and medium length fat chains?

Ben Pratt's Gravatar Reply to Jon

This is a very valuable question which perhaps others may also wish to know. First we must understand that there are a few types of omega 3 fatty acids. Different foods are high in the different types. Fish and fish oils are high in omega 3 fats called EPA and DHA which much of the research has been done on that has shown great health and nutrient benefits. The other is called ALA which can be found in a variety of foods the richest source being flaxseed (linseed) or flaxseed oil. ALA can also be found in walnuts, cauliflower and cabbage. Many vegetarians rely on flax and walnuts for their omega 3 intake if they choose not to eat fish. There are some concerns with this. The greater need for omega 3's is for EPA. EPA helps to reduce inflammation and improve blood flow, a considerable benfit for reducing cardiovascular disease. ALA can be converted in the body to EPA, but this tends to be limited to only 1/3 of the total intake. This will mean that a vegetarian who is reliant on plant based omega 3's will need to eat much higher levels in order to provide enough to convert to the essential EPA.

Be wise in choosing your flaxseed oil, ensure it is organic, cold pressed in a dark bottle as it tends to go rancid very quickly as it is a very unstable oil. Never heat it. Walnuts, cabbage and cauliflower should be organic, local where possible to maximise nutrient values. I have a few suggested brands of flaxseed oil recommended on my website www.naturalfoodfinder.co.uk

I hope this helps in providing you a way to find this necessary nutrient without compromising on quality.

PP's Gravatar Wow.. This was so helpful and informative without blinding me with science, (which is pretty easy to do)
I have been so stressed these last couple of weeks and have had so little energy for exercise, which I pushed myself to do anyway and then wondered why I didn`t feel better, all the while craving salt and sugar..
Yep, all the things you described!
I can`t thank you both enough for this podcast.

PP's Gravatar I just listened to this again with hubs and we have a few questions..

1.Hubs has colesterol of 6.8 and his doctor suggested he took Statins which he chose not to do.. So are you saying his high colesterol is a good thing? And will coconut oil make it higher?
2.We both take good quality fish oil supplement. Are you suggesting that cod liver oil would be better?
3. We also take pycnogenol which is super to boost the immune system but are you saying its better to have lower immunity to be healthier?
4. Is it ok to cook with butter?
5.You suggest using good quality butter. How do you know if it is good quality? And is spreadable butter ok?
6. My deep fat fryer recommends corn oil. Is that what you would suggest too?( I dont use it very often)

I think thats it for now..
Sorry to be so confused???

Katfrin's Gravatar Sometimes I'm a bit of a slow burner in the thought department!!
Last year I suddenly put on shed loads of weight ( unfortunatley not muscle or a sudden invasion of a loaded rucksack). Looking back recently I firmly point the finger at stress. My employer had been summarily taken over by a rival and we didn;t know what was going on. The world economic system was on the brink of collapse - just as background!
The other thing was that my husband was on statins - they drove him mad. I wouldn't normally talk about this as it's not my story but I think it's kind of pertinent to this. I'm afraid that the statins made him absolutely stark raving bonkers "I'm going to kill myself" mad. He didn't sleep for four weeks apart for the first couple of days after taking them.
He went to see the doctor - got put on the more expensive ones and some mental health support that he never took up,. He took the more expensive ones for 9 months. Over about a year he's been complaining about such pain in his feet that he can't sleep ( good recipe for mental health) . All fingers were pointing at the mega doses of modern antibiotics that were infused into him 4 hourly for a couple of weeks (they saved his life) causing peripheral nerve damage. It all got a bit weird as they didn't want to say that as they might have got sued as he was left on them a few more days than he should have been ( they ran out of veins in the end). We aren't the suing sort - We are just happy he's still with us, He was also getting bad tempered, losing his memory. The good thing was that his cholesterol went down from 8.5 to 4. But his good cholestrol was slipping away from view.

A couple of weeks ago he saw another doctor - he's been taken off the statins altogether and is a changed chap. He's getting his memory back, he's happy and his feet don't hurt so much. I'm no longer thinking of paying into the escape fund! This is only a couple of weeks off the medication and the difference was amazing. We looked into scare stories of statins on the web after the first episode and there weren't many ( apart from the poor people who did go pyschotic or commited suicide as a result).

Now this was pretty hard for me at the time ( last October/November when he was contemplating suicide every night) I didn't know what was going on except he was very unhappy and making the rest of us unhappy too. I exploded with fat gain over that month. So yes I do think that stress made me fat - I'm hoping that a happy statin free hub will help me lose more fat in the future.

alargamiento pene's Gravatar Very interesting and informative. I think many people think that it is the opposite. I will have this in mind cause sometimes I don't get why I'm not thinner when sometimes I don't have time to eat.
