Kathryn12's Gravatar I think if I had seen this prior to starting petecohen.tv I would have found it all a bit daunting (what is she saying I SHOULD eat? What must I avoid?) but I guess for me the message was (apart from transfatty acids of course) we should eat what our bodies need, not eliminate any food groups and have sensible portion sizes if we are less active. Fascinating stuff.

Mandie's Gravatar I'm astounded!!!! I always wondered what Atkins was on about and now I understand! This is AMAZING! Another lightbulb has lit! From now on I shall be drinking wholemilk, normal mayo, and virtually no no-fat products and NOTHING with sweetners in them - although I eat very little aspartame as it's just too sweet now that I've given up sugar.

I keep looking back to the diet during the war and always assumed (thanks to my Mum) that the nation was healthier due to rationing BUT now I understand that it's about controlling portions - Mary (bless her!) simply says that yes, we're not doing as much physical work as we did 100 years ago but the diet was correct - all we have to do to make it fit today's lifestyle is to eat less of it - BECAUSE WE DON'T NEED THE QUANTITY ANYMORE!

It's SO simple - and SUCH a relief!

As for trans-fats - I feel nauseous!

Thank you for the link Pete - fascinating stuff....

Katfrin's Gravatar I found this very interesting and supports my delight in my latest discovery - coconut greek yogurt!! YUM!!
Apart from that I'd question the amount of dairy we eat anyway - not only because I does wierd things to me - but we are the only animals that eat the stuff after we are weaned and we take it from another species who's milk proteins are very different to our own. That said I'd rather eat good butter than a spread anyday of the week.

Dean's Gravatar good to see this, I had been getting the message quite a lot that coconut oil is one of the best to cook with, something about it not breaking down and being medium chain, which is supposed to encourage fat burning. Pity really that it has such a distinctive taste. Lesley Kenton is an interesting read on this subject, she is also keen on a high raw food diet. She used to be very hard line, completely raw and vegan, but has widened her remit quite a bit now.

zil's Gravatar I found this really interesting. I also read some of her related articles (on 'westonaprice.org' or you can Google Mary Enig) -same message but in more depth. I also have recently started to use coconut oil for cooking. I quite like the taste, but you can get versions without the coconut taste- Higher Nature do one, and probably others do to.

Ali's Gravatar This has got me really concerned now because my 10 year old has been drinking 'green' milk since the age of 5, and she loves mullerlight yoghurts - which are loaded with aspartame. Is it really that bad?
I must admit that I tend to eat low/no fat and cant remember the last time I ate butter. Dont think I could drink whole milk now but could possibly make my porridge with it?
The messages out there are all so confusing. I must admit to making notes while watching the video. I am going to check ingredients now - am really concerned about what Mary said about transfatty acids. i always look at the 'saturated' fat content, but the message came across loud and clear that we must never eat transfatty acids - i just hope the labels are clear!

Think I should plan a whole day to do my food shop and remember to take my reading glasses as the small print of ingredients is really small. I am going to look into local farm shops though which should take some of the headache out of the shopping.

Once again Pete, you have provided much food for thought.
Thankyou

Heather's Gravatar I would really have liked more actual science in this interview. Maybe because I am a scientist myself and therefore need hard facts to make me change my viewpoint on saturated fats. A bit too waffly for my liking. Sorry!

BikerB's Gravatar Wow, that blew my mind a bit! I dont have the biggest brain, so some of it was over my head, but very very interesting. How are we to know who to believe? Having done Atkins in the past I always felt low fat wasn't good, he used to say they pumped it full of sugar to give it more taste. More sugar leads to more cases of diabetes, which we see on the increase today.
Seems like the food industry are the big baddies as they are only interested in making money and not the health of mankind.
Much to think about.
Thanks Pete.

Annie's Gravatar Very interesting. I brought my boys up on raw unpasturised milk in Cumbria. For years since I've read about all the low fat stuff I thought perhaps I had given them something damaging, but am pleased to hear Mary's views. They are both over 6ft tall and strapping lads, one in particular is a triathlete and personal trainer, but I never gave them processed foods always cooking from scratch (not much else to do when it's wet in Cumbria!) so maybe it's a combination of all that she says. I love whole milk, I don't have much of it anyway so am changing back to it.
