Start your big adventure

When starting a weight loss programme, many people are filled with fear. The little voice in our heads asks us Will it work? What if I fail again? I’m going to have to give up things I enjoy!

Well, let me tell you, it doesn’t have to be this way, why not start you weight loss journey by seeing it as a big adventure?

As toddlers, our lives were one big adventure. Bathtime was a sea voyage, bedtime was an exciting journey to another land and playtime was anything you wanted it to be. Even mealtimes could become an escapade with aeroplanes of mashed potato and swamps of tomato ketchup. We just did things for the fun of it and for the sheer joy of doing. But chances are you were told: ‘Stop playing with your food’, ‘If you’re going to splash around, you’re getting straight out of the bath’, ‘Grow up and stop being silly – you’re not really Wonder Woman.’ There comes a time when those repeated messages dampen our adventurous spirit. We’re encouraged to give up our thirst for excitement and adopt a sensible ‘grown-up’ life that, quite frankly, can seem staid and boring. When it comes to weight loss, we have ideas about being good and bad and being deprived. Sometimes people focus on what they are losing , rather than what they are going to gain.

Yet life can continue to be an adventure, if you want it to, to the day you die. If you allow yourself to rekindle the exploratory nature that we all have, life can become much more fun!

If you approached your weight loss journey as an adventure more of the time, what do you think you would achieve?

Quick Fix

Remember some of the adventures you used to have as a child. Take yourself back to some of those moments and experience again the excitement you felt at the time.  Notice how that feeling can get stronger the more you focus on the experience. Plan to do something adventurous soon!

You’ve got a friend

Of all the things I have achieved and created in my life, the thing I am the most proud of is the Weight Loss Guru Community. Members of my weight loss programme tell me the support they receive from each other is priceless.

A good support network can help you achieve all and any of your goals. Whitney Roberts, registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator from Blount Memorial Weight Management Center writes about the importance of support in this article.

She says:

“Having a strong support system is crucial to making lifestyle changes and sticking with them. When people begin their weight loss journeys, they often are highly motivated. But to stay motivated through set backs and weight loss plateaus – we need to receive continuous support and encouragement from friends, family and support groups. Support also is important to help you stay on track, to stay focused on the ultimate goal and to hold you accountable for your efforts.”

I see evidence of this every day in the Weight Loss Guru Community. Here’s what some members have said:

" I feel so encouraged by Pete’s daily messages and my fellow bloggers…thank you so much!!"

"Thank you for all of your replies…it is good to know someone is out there and encouraging."

"I just wanted to say how much I am enjoying the community blog and how much strength and inspiration it is giving me. Every day I read other people’s stories and realise I am not alone, other people have the same issues and worries that I have. This gives me so much inspiration and gives me even more resolve to carry on."

I’ll leave you with this great song
